Montrose Port has experienced a surge in vessel traffic, contributing £25 million to the Angus economy, according to a recent report.

During the 2022/23 fiscal year, a record-breaking 576 vessels berthed at Montrose Port, marking a 10% rise from the previous year. The gross tonnage reached 2,943,029, up from 2,240,939 in the previous year.

Captain Tom Hutchison, CEO of Montrose Port Authority, highlighted the achievement, stating, "Our remarkable growth and accomplishments over the past year underscore our dedication and strategic vision. We've not only exceeded our projections but also solidified our position as a vital player in the offshore wind sector."

He further emphasized that the port's expansion is not limited to infrastructure but encompasses a broader role as a generator of livelihood for the local community. The growth is also demonstrated in a 34% increase in the port's turnover figure, which, as a trust port, is not required to be disclosed.

The success can be attributed in part to the establishment of operations and maintenance bases for the Seagreen and Inch Cape offshore wind projects at Montrose. The offshore wind sector now contributes more than a fifth of the port's total revenue.

An economic impact study conducted by Beaver Economics highlighted Montrose Port's contribution to both Montrose and the Angus region. The port directly and indirectly supports 384 permanent, full-time employees, generating £13.6 million in annual salaries and adding £25.7 million in net gross value added (GVA) to the regional economy.

Neil MacCallum, Managing Director of Beaver Economics, expressed confidence that the port's impact will further increase with the arrival of more companies.

Montrose Port's investments are channeled back into its infrastructure and local community in line with its trust port status. Over the past year, the port allocated £800,000 to a new purpose-built pilot boat and over £350,000 to a new decommissioning base. Additionally, a six-figure sum was invested in an advanced composites facility developed by Balmoral Comtec. This facility aims to manufacture large-scale components for the offshore energy sector, reflecting the port's commitment to wind, wave, and tidal energy industries.

Angus Council leader Beth Whiteside praised the port's significant economic contribution and its role as a catalyst for prosperity and innovation. Montrose Port Authority's community fund has also extended support through £92,000 in donations and sponsorships to local causes and charities.
